How Often Should You Get a Massage? A Therapist's Perspective
How Often Should You Get a Massage?
This is one of the most common questions we get at Deejai Thai Massage — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.
For General Wellness and Stress Management
Recommended: Once a month
If you’re in reasonably good health and using massage primarily to manage everyday stress, maintain flexibility, and feel your best, a monthly session is a solid baseline. Most people notice the benefits lasting 3–4 weeks before tension starts creeping back.
For Chronic Pain or Tension
Recommended: Every 1–2 weeks (initially), then monthly
If you’re dealing with chronic back pain, neck tension, or recovery from an injury, more frequent sessions in the beginning produce better results. The first 4–6 weeks of regular treatment can create meaningful, lasting change in muscle tissue. Once you’ve made progress, you can drop to monthly maintenance.
For Athletes and Active People
Recommended: Every 2 weeks, or after major events
If you train regularly, massage helps with recovery, prevents injury, and maintains the range of motion you need to perform. Many athletes schedule sessions after major training weeks or competitions.
For Relaxation and Special Occasions
Recommended: Whenever you need it
Some people treat massage as a treat rather than a routine — and that’s perfectly valid. A single session can provide significant relief from accumulated stress, even if you only come in a few times a year.
Signs You Might Need More Frequent Sessions
- Tension headaches returning quickly after each session
- Postural problems that aren’t improving
- Chronic muscle soreness that doesn’t resolve with rest
- High-stress periods at work or home
A Note on Consistency
The most important thing isn’t the frequency — it’s the consistency. Two sessions a month every month will do more for your body than six sessions in January followed by nothing until June. Build massage into your wellness routine the same way you would exercise or sleep.
